Week 09
The submission of Design Proposition is around the corner, so I continued to research on ideas for it.
My main concept for this poster is to translate the idea of "Human returning to the mother earth at its simplest form-- soil" into visual image.
As peace lily is my inspiration for the pot and it will be my inspiration for my space in the future, it's important to show in the poster as well.
Below is the final work:
At the bottom is the city landscape/ tombstones. Human after dying being lifted to the heaven and transform into beautiful lily at the end. It is a cycle of human's life which I perceive.
Other than design proposition, I also did research about Tadao Ando for his characteristic of his spiritual architectures.
1. Usage of light
Tadao Ando once said that " the creation of space in architecture is simple the condensation and purification of the power of light". As we can see from his famous architecture, for example: The Church of Light at Ibaraki, Osaka speaks the most of this concept .
The absence of the ornaments and the decorative items let visitor to focus more on the building's original state. With the strategically placed voids/ openings, the light interact with the building differently at different period of time. The opening at the east allows the sun to shine through every morning and light up the entire space.
2. "HAIKU" effect
Ando's architectures often emphasizing the nothingness and empty space to represent the beauty of simplicity. The simplicity of his architecture emphasizes the concept of sensation and physical experiences.
3. "ZEN"
Due to the lack of ornaments/ decorative items found in his architectures, it encourage the visitor to reflect on their inner shelves rather than the outward appearance. Ando's architecture is "the reserve of technology". All of them are at its minimal/ barest form.
4. The Duality
Light/ dark
Solid/ void
Stark/ serene
By using these opposing characteristics, Ando is able to create a special experience to whoever interact with the architectures.
Before going down into the temple, one has to walk through a dark passage way. This helps the visitor to experience the building and entering to another realm when seeing the light.
5. Regionalism
Ando's architecture is usually a work which manifesting the area's location, history, culture. His study on the location helps him in making decision when designing. He likes to bring in the natural elements from outside to be a part which shapes his building. As he said:
"Light and wind only have meaning when they are introduced inside a house in form"
